Members of U2 appear with Gavin Friday
Today at Carnegie Hall in New York, Gavin Friday held a concert in celebration of his 50th birthday. An Evening With Gavin Friday And Friends is part of the Red Nights series of concerts held by Product Red to raise money for the fight against AIDS. All four members of U2 are on the bill for this concert, although listed separately.
The songs featuring members of U2 were:
Members of U2 appeared for two songs in the first half of the show, then five in the second. The first was when Bono and Edge joined Gavin Friday for a cover of T. Rex's Children Of The Revolution early in the first half of the show. Bono spoke briefly to the audience afterwards while Larry's kit was assembled, then Adam and Larry came on stage and all four members of U2 plus numerous other musicians on instruments such as cello and horn played Gavin Friday's I Want To Live - though Gavin himself did not participate.
The members of U2 then left the stage. After another song was performed, Paul McGuinness, U2's manager, appeared on stage to give a speech about Gavin and when the Virgin Prunes opened for U2. After this speech and an introduction by Courtney Love, the Virgin Prunes played together for the first time in a long time. Bono and Larry watched their performance from sidestage.
In the second half, all of U2 appeared again, this time to play Gavin's song King Of Trash. Like the appearances in the first half, it was with numerous other musicians but not Gavin Friday. After this performance, all four left the stage. Bono returned a little while later to introduce a surprise guest appearance by Lady Gaga, then watched her performance from sidestage. A short time thereafter, Edge appeared with Gavin Friday to perform Gavin's song Another Blow On The Bruise.
Bono then made another appearance, singing Gavin Friday's song The Last Song I'll Ever Sing with Gavin's musicians. Before leaving stage, he introduced Lou Reed. During Lou Reed's appearance, Larry and Edge came out to join Lou and Gavin in performing Sweet Jane. Bono joined in at the end, and other artists involved were Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, and Shane MacGowan. The show finished with a cover of David Bowie's Jean Genie as the finale - all four members of U2 participated with the night's other guests.
