U2's Sydney #1 setlist, 13/12
Today, U2 performed their first of two shows in Sydney at ANZ Stadium. No, not the venue formerly known as ANZ Stadium that they played in Brisbane on the Zoo TV and Popmart tours; this is Stadium Australia rejoicing in a new and unoriginal name. U2 played this venue in 2006 when it was known by the corporate name of Telstra Stadium.
The band did a soundcheck in the early evening. They rehearsed Mysterious Ways, All I Want Is You a few times (a song not yet performed on the current tour), and astonishingly, Love Rescue Me, which has not been performed live since 10 January 1990. Edge did some solo soundchecking before this, including Where The Streets Have No Name, Beautiful Day, and Vertigo. Even earlier, the crew soundchecked City Of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, and Moment Of Surrender.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in the setlist was not what changed, but what stayed the same - Bad remained in the set after its appearance at the second Brisbane show. This is just its fifth performance in 2010 and the first time it has appeared at consecutive shows this year. It featured a couple of INXS snippets and was played immediately after Stuck In A Moment, dedicated to Michael Hutchence and performed for just the second time in 2010. Before Stuck, Bono noted that Bob Geldof was in the audience and sung a line of Do They Know It's Christmas (funnily enough, Geldof recently said he has to live with the knowledge he co-wrote that song, which he considers one of the worst ever). Jay-Z joined U2 for Sunday Bloody Sunday, like he did at the first shows in both Auckland and Melbourne.
As usual, I Will Follow returned to the setlist in the third spot after missing the previous show. Moment Of Surrender returned to the set after its shock curfew-enforced omission in Brisbane, and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me held onto its spot in the encore's rotational slot. The full setlist was:
