U2's Phoenix #1 setlist, 22/05
Today, U2 performed the first of two shows in Phoenix, Arizona. At the four previous shows, the intro music was Beat On The Brat by Ramones (containing samples of Discotheque and Even Better Than The Real Thing), but tonight it was replaced by Patti Smith's People Have The Power.
The setlist was almost identical to the previous show, 19 May in San Jose. There was, however, one big addition: In God's Country was performed for the first time since 2 December 2001, assisted by a member of the crowd on guitar. That's a gap of 13 years, 5 months, and 20 days between performances. Since the end of the Joshua Tree Tour in December 1987, In God's Country has only been performed eight times: four early on Lovetown in 1989 (including one show when it was a surprise opener), three late on Elevation in 2001, and now tonight. It was not on the printed setlist and appeared as part of a fun and loose section of the second set, during which Bono also brought three sisters on stage for Mysterious Ways and Desire.
The otherwise unchanged nature of the setlist meant that San Jose's big surprise, The Electric Co., stuck around for a second performance, and Bad also remained near the end of the second set. This time Bad was actually on the printed setlist. Performances of Bad at consecutive shows have been rare in recent years. On 360 it was done at consecutive shows just once - its first two appearances on 21 and 24 July 2009.
The full setlist was:
