Rumour time: Australia in March 2016?
Australian and New Zealand fans have been hanging out for any rumours that U2 might be planning a visit. There had been no hints of substance - until now.
Local fansite U2 FANZ has reported on rumours provided this morning on radio station Triple M by Nui Te Koha. He claims that an announcement of a March 2016 arena tour to Australia is imminent within the next couple of weeks. There is no mention of specific cities nor New Zealand. A fan on Twitter also claims that "good sources" say the tour will be in arenas.
Nui Te Koha has not always been known for his accuracy, but U2-related activity has heated up a bit in Australia lately. Song For Someone has got more of a push on radio than The Miracle or Every Breaking Wave did. Notably, on Monday, the launch of the new radio show by local celebrity duo Hamish & Andy included the debut of a new mix of Song For Someone.
If this rumour is true, it will be U2's first arena shows anywhere south of the equator since Lovetown in 1989 almost three decades ago - with one exception. The only arena show on Popmart was in Western Australia, when the tour's massive presentation crammed into Perth's Burswood Dome on 17 February 1998.
Aussies and Kiwis, keep in mind that if it's an arena tour, U2 may stick with the pattern of the first two legs of the Innocence + Experience Tour: residencies in select cities. If so, that could mean that shows might be in fewer locations than usual, possibly just Melbourne and Sydney. So if you live outside of Australasia's two largest cities, be prepared to travel and squirrel away some money.
(Of course, now that we've given you this heads-up, U2 will go ahead and announce their first ever shows in Canberra, Shepparton, Launceston, Port Pirie, Kalgoorlie, Alice Springs, Longreach, Dubbo, Te Awamutu, Hokitika, and a week-long blow-out in my hometown of Raumati Beach. Go on lads, what are you waiting for?)
