U2 to perform in Mumbai—their first gig in India
If you thought the Joshua Tree Tour 2019 schedule was settled after the announcement of the Manila gig in late July, think again.
U2 are going to India for the very first time. They will perform at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on 15 December 2019. Our database entry for this gig is here.
Tickets go on sale to the general public at noon, Thursday 1 October (all times local). U2.com members can access a presale from noon, Tuesday 24 September. The local promoter is also running a presale that opens at noon, Thursday 26 September, for which you must register by 11:59pm on Monday 23 September. All details about presale access and registration are in the U2.com announcement.
It looks like this really is the last show left to be announced. U2.com emphasises, in bold, that it is "the final date on The Joshua Tree Tour 2019".
Indian fans have had a very long wait for U2 to visit their country. In late 1983, the band took the War Tour to Japan and Hawaii, and intended to follow these dates with shows in Australia, New Zealand, and India. Instead they decided to take a short rest from touring. The Australian and New Zealand shows took place in August and September 1984 on the Unforgettable Fire Tour, but no Indian show had materialised—until now.
This makes India the fourth country that U2 are visiting for the first time on the Joshua Tree Tour 2019. It means this tour visits the most new countries since Popmart in 1997–98, when the band went to eight new countries. We described this tidbit in detail in the article about Manila, if you want to know more.
