From the Alps to the Rimutakas: Zurich and Wellington in 2010?
Whether you live in Switzerland or New Zealand, a couple of recent articles give reason to be hopeful for a U2 visit in 2010.
As we indicated a month ago, a venue map for Zurich is on U2.com, even though no show has yet been announced. A recent interview (in German) with the head of the Dübendorf airfield indicates the chances of a concert at the venue during the 2010 European leg of the 360° Tour are good. He confirms that permission has been granted for U2 to play there, following on the heels of concerts by the Rolling Stones and Madonna. With the requisite permission in place, it is unknown why a concert has not yet been announced.
From one mountainous country to another - negotiations are continuing for a concert in Wellington, New Zealand. In an article about a proposed Barbra Streisand concert, The Dominion Post also reports that an official planning document indicates two concerts at Westpac Stadium are in the works for October or November 2010. U2 have not performed in the New Zealand capital since their Lovetown concert at the former Athletic Park on 8 November 1989 - and speaking on a personal note as a Wellingtonian, this would be a dream come true if it happens.
For those of you living on the other side of the Tasman (including myself nowadays), this bodes well for the previously rumoured Australian leg. Any visit to New Zealand would occur in conjunction with Australian concerts. Unfortunately, there are no specific details on potential Australian concerts. I know those of you in Adelaide and Perth in particular are wondering if your cities will make the tour schedule this time around, and we will update as soon as we know anything.
For the moment, it seems, patience is a virtue and hopefully confirmation for the rumoured markets will be forthcoming soon.
