U2 perform in honour of Gerry Ryan
On the 30th of April, the famous Irish radio and television presenter Gerry Ryan died aged 53. At his funeral on the 6th of May, U2 performed in his honour. Due to volcanic ash from Iceland closing Irish airspace, the band could not fly to Dublin to appear in person at the ceremony, so their performance was broadcast live via satellite from New York.
The band played one song, With Or Without You. The song was one of Gerry Ryan's favourites. At the end, Bono included the Shine Like Stars verse, slightly modified to tribute Ryan.
(I would just like to apologise for the delay in posting this article. I am currently overseas on a research trip/holiday and did not even know about this performance until today. Just when you think nothing is happening in the U2 world, something goes and happens while you are away from the Internet!)
