U2's Turin rehearsals, Monday 02/08
Today, U2 rehearsed extensively at Stadio Olimpico, and there were some more surprises in store for us in the wake of yesterday's rehearsal. There are two pieces of particularly notable news: firstly, that two new songs were rehearsed, one uptempo and one slow; and secondly that Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World was rehearsed. It was last performed almost seventeen years ago at the final concert on ZooTV, 10 December 1993.
The day began with some soundchecking around midday, as we reported earlier. No vocals could be heard, and this was most likely by the band's crew. The songs heard were:
Miss Sarajevo
City Of Blinding Lights
Magnificent
Mysterious Ways
In the late afternoon, there was a bass and drum soundcheck of Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World, and a short while later, some guitar riffs could be heard. We emphasise that the following guitar riffs were most likely played by guitar tech Dallas Schoo, not The Edge himself:
Elevation
In A Little While
Unknown Caller
Gloria
Get On Your Boots
Until The End Of The World
Once evening fell, the band themselves showed up to rehearse. Like yesterday, it was indeed all four members of U2. They began the evening with a short session of the following songs:
In A Little While
Elevation
Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World several times
Soon / Beautiful Day
It is unknown whether Soon was live or, like last year, a recording. The latter seems more likely. There is, in addition to this, a rumour that the band are considering opening the set with Beautiful Day. If they do so, it would be the first time U2 have opened a full tour concert with a song not from the latest album since Bullet The Blue Sky opened the last night of Lovetown, 10 January 1990 (or, if you choose to count it, Sunday Bloody Sunday opened the public rehearsal in Hershey on 7 August 1992).
After a break, the band then returned to the stage at 10pm and rehearsed what looks like at least the skeleton of an actual concert setlist, rather than just a random assortment of songs. After the intro music of Space Oddity by David Bowie, the band played:
Beautiful Day
Slow new song
Uptempo new song
Elevation
In A Little While
Miss Sarajevo
Until The End Of The World
The Unforgettable Fire
City Of Blinding Lights
Vertigo
Crazy Tonight remix / Discothèque (snippet)
Sunday Bloody Sunday
This final rehearsal session ran for almost an hour, concluding just shy of 11pm. Note the Discothèque snippet - the only prior representation of the Pop album on the 360° Tour were snippets of Mofo at seven concerts on the second leg. Some of you may also remember that there was a report of U2 rehearsing If God Will Send His Angels in Barcelona before the first leg on 23 June 2009.
As per usual, we thank the good people of U2Place and U2Italia for their reports, as well as our own sources. To conclude, U2.com's day 4 video is up, showing a few shots of The Edge and nothing particularly surprising. Guitar afficiandos may appreciate a couple of the angles, at least.
