U2's Turin rehearsals, Wednesday 04/08
For the fourth day in a row, U2 have rehearsed at Turin's Stadio Olimpico, and today they rehearsed a full setlist. This particular setlist is similar in structure to the setlist performed in 2009 on the second leg of the tour, but with a handful of changes. Notable is the reduction in songs from No Line On The Horizon, but this is partially offset by the addition of brand new material.
The band are working on a new intro for the concerts. We reported on this yesterday, but it turns out that was with some degree of misrepresentation. After Space Oddity, the band have performed a new intro instead of Soon (and unlike Soon last year, this appears to be live). We reported this as the "flowering rose of Glastonbury" song; further evidence, especially today's setlist below, shows that it is not quite that song - rather, it is an intro piece based upon the same riff idea. A recording of this intro made byU2Place is at the end of this article.
So, to today's rehearsal setlist. Like previous days, the band actually did two rehearsal sessions - one to warm up in the early evening, then an extended session later. At 6pm, the band took the stage in Turin and rehearsed the following tracks:
In A Little While
Miss Sarajevo
Until The End Of The World
Magnificent (Edge only)
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
After taking a break, U2 returned to the stage around 9:15pm and rehearsed the aforementioned full setlist. They performed the new intro and 22 songs:
New Intro
Beautiful Day
Magnificent
Get On Your Boots
Mysterious Ways
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
New "flowering rose of Glastonbury" song
Elevation
In A Little While
Miss Sarajevo
Until The End Of The World
The Unforgettable Fire
City Of Blinding Lights
Vertigo
Crazy Tonight / Discothèque (snippet)
Sunday Bloody Sunday
MLK
Walk On / You'll Never Walk Alone (snippet)
--- "Encore" break for Desmond Tutu video ---
One
Amazing Grace (snippet) / Where The Streets Have No Name
--- "Encore" break ---
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
With Or Without You
Moment of Surrender
The albums with the best representation in this rehearsal setlist are No Line On The Horizon and All That You Can't Leave Behind, with four songs each. U2's best known albums, The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, both clock in with three tracks each, and they are the usual tracks that have most consistently represented their given albums over the past few tours. Pride continues to miss the cut, leaving representation of The Unforgettable Fire to the less likely subjects of MLK and the title track. There is still no sign of any pre-War material.
We would like to thank U2Place, contributors who have posted live to fan forums, and our own sources for all the information provided in this article.
Now, that new intro. U2Place has posted a recording of it that shows how it follows Space Oddity and leads into Beautiful Day. Listen below, and compare it to the recording of the new Glastonbury song here to hear the striking similarities in the riff. This recording of the intro dates from the Tuesday rehearsal:
U2.com have posted their day 2 video, this time starring Adam Clayton. Meanwhile, away from Turin, preparations for erecting the Claw have begun in Frankfurt for the 10 August 2010 concert. You can check it out via their webcams; unlike Turin's webcam, these two are actually inside the venue.
