U2's Turin rehearsals, Thursday 05/08
Tomorrow is the big day. U2 will perform live for the first time in over nine months. Understandably, the band have continued rehearsals today, although unlike yesterday they have not soundchecked a complete setlist. Rather, it looks as if they have been doing last-minute rehearsals of those parts of the setlist they are most anxious to prepare, predominantly new songs and other parts different to last year's setlist. They have also rehearsed Ultra Violet for the first time this year, after many people pronounced it dead when Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me was rehearsed in the setlist spot occupied in 2009 by Ultra Violet.
Thanks as per usual to the good people at U2Place and U2Italia (both in Italian) for their reports from the venue. The setlist of songs rehearsed today was:
Space Oddity (taped, of course)
New Intro
Beautiful Day
New slow song, twice
New "flowering rose of Glastonbury" song, five(!) times
Elevation twice
Riffs from Discothèque / Crazy Tonight
MLK intro, three times
After taking a break, the band returned and rehearsed the following:
Space Oddity (taped)
New Intro
Beautiful Day
In A Little While (only reported by U2Italia)
Miss Sarajevo
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Ultra Violet (Light My Way)
Crazy Tonight / Discothèque (snippet)
It is still unclear just how substantial the Discothèque snippet is in Crazy Tonight. Also still subject of debate is whether the band is playing the new intro live or if it is taped, and how much it owes to the Glastonbury song.
If you have not heard the new material, the new intro can be heard at the end of this article, while the Glastonbury song and the new slow song can both be heard here. One reader, Erik S., has drawn our attention to an old clip that U2.com posted from U2's sessions in Fez, Morocco. Compare the new intro to what can be heard in this video between 2:32 and 3:35, especially from about 3:05 when Brian Eno stops talking over it:
Speaking of U2.com, their day 1 video has been posted. It follows Bono, predominantly showing him meeting fans but it also has some footage of him on stage.
See you tomorrow, when hopefully U2 will spring some surprises and new material on us. Matthias will be in Turin, and we will both bring you all the updates and content we can. The 360° Tour is back!
