U2's Melbourne #2 setlist, 03/12
Tonight, U2 performed their second of two concerts in Melbourne. In the early afternoon, the band's crew did a soundcheck - Edge was confirmed to be on site and participated in at least some of it. None of the other members of the band were spotted. The soundcheck included lengthy checking of City Of Blinding Lights in the wake of Edge's guitar failure during that song at the first Melbourne show. All other songs that were soundchecked were played at the first show, except for New Year's Day, which was checked on piano.
Before the concert began, U2 made a surprise appearance on Australian radio at the farewell show for the comedy duo Hamish & Andy. They performed two songs acoustically, Vertigo and Desire. This is just the second performance of Desire this year, after it was done spontaneously in Turkey on 4 September 2010. Our listing for U2's appearance with Hamish & Andy is here.
The concert itself featured a couple of surprises. Stuck In A Moment was played for the first time in 2010; it was last played on 28 October 2009 in Vancouver. It was done acoustically by just Bono and Edge, and dedicated to Michael Hutchence. It was followed by Pride, making just its eighth live appearance in 2010 - an odd thing to say about a song usually such a setlist staple. The two other changes from the first night in Melbourne were the anticipated changes in the rotational slots: New Year's Day replacing I Will Follow and Ultra Violet replacing Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. Also, before I Still Haven't Found, Bono got the audience to sing Happy Birthday for Jay-Z, whose 41st birthday is tomorrow.
