U2's Brisbane #1 setlist, 08/12
Today, U2 performed their first of two shows in Brisbane. All of their previous stadium shows in Brisbane have been held at the Queensland Sports And Athletics Centre (formerly known as ANZ Stadium). However, that venue has seen better days, and this tour, U2 have been able to secure a couple of coveted concert slots at Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium). Earlier in the day, the band's crew did a soundcheck; it included Ultra Violet, City Of Blinding Lights, Moment Of Surrender, Where The Streets Have No Name, and Elevation.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in the setlist was the performance of unreleased song North Star. This is just the ninth time it has been performed live, and the first time since 2 October 2010 in Coimbra. Like most previous performances, it was played just by Bono and Edge, with Edge on electric guitar. I Will Follow returned to the setlist after an absence of one show. Pride and Ultra Violet both stayed in the set after the second Melbourne show; it has been rare for either of them to be played at two consecutive shows in 2010.
As today is the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death, Bono made multiple references to him. Amongst others, Dear Prudence appeared as the snippet between One and Streets in lieu of the usual Amazing Grace, and both Pride and the Stand By Me snippet in I Still Haven't Found were sung for to Lennon. Pride's lyrics were modified to suit. On a lighter note, during Bono's speech before I Still Haven't Found, he remarked that Brisbane is "amazing", to which Edge replied that it's "OK if you like that tropical paradise thing".
Early in the main set, there was a brief spot of rain, leading to the usual snippetry. The full setlist was:
