U2's Perth #1 setlist, 18/12
Today, U2 performed in Perth. This was the first time U2 have performed in Western Australia since the Popmart Tour almost 13 years ago, on 17 February 1998. That was the only arena show of the Popmart Tour. Accordingly, this is U2's first ever outdoor gig in Perth.
Both I Will Follow and I Still Haven't Found were rotated back into the setlist tonight after not being played at the band's previous concert. In terms of the other rotational slots, Pride and Ultra Violet both remained in the set, an uncommon occurrence in 2010 for them both. One rare song showed up in the middle of the main set: unreleased track North Star was performed for just the second time on the 4th leg (and the tenth time ever). It was last played in Brisbane on 8 December 2010.
The other major event occupying Perth at the moment is cricket, namely Australia vs England in the third Test of the 2010-11 Ashes series across town at the WACA. Before I Still Haven't Found, Bono acknowledged this by comparing the band members to cricketers. He described Adam as the Shane Warne of U2, Larry as Adam Gilchrist, Edge as Michael Hussey - and himself as iconic cult batsman David Boon, because "we share an overwhelming desire to stick it to the Brits"! Bono also acknowledged the presence of cricketer Dennis Lillee and British rockers Muse in the audience tonight.
