U2's Johannesburg setlist, 13/02
U2's first 360° Tour concert for 2011 was held today, and it took place in a location rather unusual by U2 touring standards - Johannesburg, South Africa. U2's only previous visit to South Africa was almost 13 years ago, when they concluded the Popmart Tour there with concerts in Cape Town on 16 March 1998 and Johannesburg on 21 March 1998.
U2 soundchecked yesterday. We believe today's soundcheck was just by the band's crew; it featured City Of Blinding Lights, Where The Streets Have No Name, Beautiful Day, and the piano from Miss Sarajevo.
The setlist U2 performed was very similar to the set from the previous leg of the tour. The biggest change was in fact the intro; for the first time, Space Oddity was not played over the PA before the show, being replaced by a remix of Get On Your Boots featuring the Soweto Gospel Choir. This also meant that Return Of The Stingray Guitar, the live opener for all 2010 concerts, was not played, hence Beautiful Day was the opener. This is the first time that an old song (i.e. not from the latest album or unreleased) has opened a full tour show since Bullet The Blue Sky opened 10 January 1990 (or if you are counting dress rehearsal gigs, since Sunday Bloody Sunday opened 7 August 1992).
Update: Initial reports from the stadium (as reflected in an early edition of this article) suggested that Scarlet was only snippeted before Walk On. It was in fact played in full by the band; Bono, however, did not sing the lyrics (yes, he omitted to sing one whole word) and instead talked over the song. We have now added Scarlet to the set.
In the two rotational slots in the middle of the main set, U2 played unreleased song North Star followed by Pride. Pride was modified in tribute to Nelson Mandela. The rotational slot in the encore was occupied tonight by Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. The show also featured a guest appearance: during I Still Haven't Found, Hugh Masekela joined U2 on trumpet.
The full setlist was:
