U2's Winnipeg setlist, 29/05
Today, U2 performed in Winnipeg. The last (and only previous) time U2 played a concert in the city was 12 June 1997 back on the Popmart Tour, almost exactly 14 years ago.
The last few days U2 have been holed up in the Burton Cummings Theatre, filming a documentary on Achtung Baby and playing many songs from the album. See this article for information. They did manage to find some time today to do some soundchecking however, primarily the new remix of Magnificent. In the gap between The Fray and U2, many fans noticed that some of the local facts on the screen had mistakes: Winnipeg was spelt "Winipeg", and the province Manitoba was called a state. Bono later poked fun at the former mistake by shouting "That's Winnipeg with two Ns" during Even Better Than The Real Thing. The Snowbirds, Canada's military aerobatics team, flew over the stadium several times in welcome prior to the start of the concert.
At the end of the main set, after Walk On finished, Bono led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday for Amnesty International's fiftieth birthday. Strictly speaking, it is not quite their fiftieth: the article by Peter Benenson that inspired the group's formation was published on 28 May 1961 and the campaign it promoted went on to coalesce into a permanent organisation later that year. But in the end, that is all technicalities, and it is hardly a surprise Bono took the opportunity to toast this milestone in the group's existence.
The setlist basically followed the pattern established by the previous shows, with All I Want Is You and Stay both holding onto their positions mid-set. The one big deviation from normal is that Moment Of Surrender was not played even though it was on the printed setlist; the show closer was With Or Without You. This is just the second time that has happened, following 9 December 2010 in Brisbane (or the third time if we count the recent Denver rehearsal). Otherwise, the setlist stuck to the usual formula, with Discothèque featuring a snippet frenzy - two snippets from the Pop album were joined by two snippets of Talking Heads songs.
