U2 on Jo Whiley's show on BBC Radio 2
Today, U2 performed on Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 2 show as part of their Songs of Innocence promo tour. This time, unlike the Italian and French TV performances, the whole band were in the studio. They were joined by a string quintet, who contributed to the second, third, and fourth songs. If you missed the show you can stream it via the BBC here.
The live performances occurred throughout Whiley's two-hour show. They were interspersed with brief chat and broadcasts of other songs. U2 performed the following set:
Our database listing for the show is here. This set included the live debuts of "Cedarwood Road" and "Song for Someone". The only old song to be featured was "Stuck in a Moment", last performed on 23 July 2011. The band decided to play it only an hour or so before the broadcast; Whiley indicated this may have been at her request.
Late in the show, Whiley asked U2 about when they would tour next. Edge said that he's "not sure the precise dates" but they will definitely be touring next year. Whiley pressed for a more specific timeframe but all Edge would say is that the band will be "buying new luggage in the spring". Bono joked that the tour would be in pubs, and when Edge replied seriously that the venues would be arenas, Bono dubbed them "mega pubs".
Some of the other songs broadcast during the show were selected by U2. They chose "Glad to See You Go" by the Ramones first - a song they used to perform live in their early days. After "Virginia Plain" by Roxy Music was played, Edge expressed jealousy that Brian Eno got to appear on the comedy Father Ted. Bono selected "Take Me to Church" by Hozier, describing the song as "a miracle". Larry, "under the influence of The Edge", chose Patti Smith's "Because The Night" and spoke about having the honour of playing it live with her.
U2's next promo performance is in two days, on The Graham Norton Show. See you then!
PS If you missed Bono's interview on NPR's World Cafe yesterday, you can listen to it here. Although the promo blurb said Bono would "perform" songs, three studio songs from the new album constituted the only music played during the interview.
