I believe that Bono's earring caught in the girl's hat and she had to help him remove it. He gave her the earring for helping him.

omg that lucky girl! if I were her, I'd wear that thing for the rest of my life! and stick my tongue out to anybody saying I don't have matching earrings!and who knows, if she ever meets Bono again when she has only one of them in, he might give her the other one too ^^
