Hi the Irish flag is green(hoist side),white & orange...green represents the native people of ireland..white represents peace and honesty...orange represents the protestant faith of northern ireland...The Irish tri-colour was first used in 1878 by irish nationalists...and it was offically the Irish flag in 1922, when the Republic of Ireland became independent from the United Kingdom.....

The orange is Protestant and the Green Catholic. Orange from I believe "William of Orange."

Thanks for your comment Ingrid & you are correct Octu2-in fact,the original tri-colour (in which orange was on the hoist side) was forgotten when the 1848 rebellion collapsed. But it was revived by the Irish Volunteers in the Easter Rising of 1916,when the colours were arranged green-white-orange.The Rising took place at the General Post Office (G.P.O),O'Connell Street,Dublinwhich was the Volunteers base.The Irish Volunteers leaders were men such as, Eamon de Valera(who would be come President of Ireland in the future), Michael Collins & Padraig Pearse.Victory by Irish Republicans in the 1918 election ensured it would be the future Irish flag.(The Easter Rising of 1916 is depicted at the start of the Hollywood film 'MICHAEL COLLINS' starring Liam Nesson-which you may have seen-which shows Collins & the Irish Volunteers gunfight with the British forces-you can the Irish tri-colour on top of the G.P.O.)

Hi there Ingrid-you're correct i'm Irish. I've been giving you the irish flag history,you are correct- by the way about the Bonavox store. Also, the Irish national flag BEFORE 1848 was a gold harp on an emerald green background (the harp is still found on the back of our EURO coins with the word 'EIRE'; which is Irish gaelic for Ireland).Also, the reason our flag became a tri-colour is; that it is based on the national flag of FRANCE. French nationalists had sympathy with THOMAS FRANCIS MEAGHER, and they advised him to make the French & Irish flags similar-which he did.
